Depth of Field Explained

Sep - 13 2023 | no comments | By

Depth of field refers to the area within an image that appears to be in focus. When a camera lens is focused on a specific object, the depth of field is the range of distance in the scene that appears to be sharp in focus, while the areas in front or behind the object gradually become blurred. This effect is primarily affected by three factors: aperture size, distance between the camera and the subject, and the focus length of the lens. A smaller aperture will increase the depth of field, while a larger aperture will decrease it. Similarly, the closer the object is to the camera, the shallower the depth of field will be, while a subject further away will increase the depth of field. Lastly, longer focus length lenses tend to have shallower depth of field than shorter focal length lenses.

Depth of field is a powerful tool for creating a sense of depth and separating subjects from their backgrounds. By carefully selecting the aperture, distance, and focal length, photographers can control how much of the image is in focus and highlight specific parts of the scene. A shallow depth of field can create a dreamy, romantic effect, while a deep depth of field can convey a sense of detail and clarity. It is important for photographers to understand the concept and how to manipulate it in order to create compelling images with visual interest and impact.

I put the word September because I was born in September. I also put the word science because it is my favorite subject. science has always been my favorite subject because it’s just full of experiments and trying to figure out how things work. I put the number 15 with an upside down one because I am 15. I put the guy with the sledgehammer because it represents my favorite video game rainbow six siege. This is my favorite game because it is the most technical and realistic first-person shooter game.

I put the Virgo sign because I am a Virgo, my birthday is September 14th. I put the Starbucks logo because I love Starbucks. I love Starbucks because I love to have the ability to be make my own drinks and customize them in my own way. I put the music note because I love music, I love music because it expresses who I am. and finally I put a baseball because I love baseball and have been playing it my whole life. I love baseball because it’s such a complex game and it brings me joy.

  1. I think my photos have very strong composition especially in the first one
  2. I did better editing the first one was a little harder to edit the background though
  3. I would get better angles instead of just front angles I would like to try overhead shots
  4. I think my second one does more than the first just because of the editing

Angles response

I found this photo on the internet, and it stood out to me and a number of ways. The first way is the size of the women. She looks supersized and makes everything look small. This is because the angle is from below and from an ant view which makes everything look big. And what makes it better is that the women is close up so you can’t really tell how tall she really is.

The second thing would be the clouds and the trees around her. They sort of wrap around her in a spiral. The way the clouds shift in a whirl and the fish eye view of the tree makes the environment look smaller. The whole picture looks like a circle or something was in action. Also the trees are not all in the photo so it helps stay focused on the subject.

The third thing would be the stance of the women. She is standing away from the basket even though she is holding the ball. This makes the viewer wonder what she is doing or is about to do. She is holding the ball straight up which might confuse the viewer. You wouldn.t know what she was about to do due to her stance.

The last thing would be the main subject. I would say the main subject would be the women but there is a lot of things in this picture. From the angle the photo is at there is a basketball, a hoop, and the women. There is a lot going on in this photo which does not help in trying to find the main subject. Those are the reasons this photo stood out to me.

Surrealism: illogical scenes and developed techniques to allow the unconscious mind to express itself.

By: Satie and Varese

Surrealism means to put something where it doesn’t belong. Surrealism is always going to be abnormal and mostly all the time will show something that will never happen. Surrealism lets the mind wonder and make up its own ideas and let its imagination run wild. I chose this photo to signify surrealism because it’s odd, but it also has a message in my opinion. To me it’s saying that the water is drying out and we will soon lose it all.

I chose this photo for the meaning explained in the first paragraph. there is a dry land with the sun hitting the glass bottle. Inside the glass bottle is a small whale but, whales wouldn’t fit in a bottle so that is an example of surrealism. another way you can see it is a normal sized whale in a big bottle which a big bottle like that would not exist to put that much water into it. The last thing about this photo that shows surrealism is a hard thing to notice but the shrub in the background fully green even though the land is rock dry, also it wouldn’t be raining in a climate like this.

Shadows And Light

This picture stood out to me because of it’s well used shadow. The shadow from the man stood out to me the most. It gives the picture an optic dark look as if something is about to happen. The man facing away from the camera also stood out to me in a strong way as it gives the picture more of a unique look. The lighting chosen was also unique as you don’t know where it is coming from, it can be a spotlight or a light on a vehicle but you don’t know. The straight line of the light also caught my eye as it shapes the mans shadow perfectly. I like the way the man’s shadow is enlarged in the shadow as it symbolizes that he is bigger inside in a way. The rain also adds a nice touch it adds the optimistic look it as he is standing in the rain in the dark. The light hitting the rain as it falls also adds a great look as it adds more of the darkness in the photo. The last thing that stood out to me was the angle of the picture which was a far away view which caught the man’s whole body but could still get the light and shadow all the way through.
